Leeds based, Asclepius MedTech Limited has been selected as a winner of the Mayor’s big ideas challenge: tackling health inequalities, an initiative led by the Mayor of West Yorkshire. As part of the award the company will receive £100,000 to scale Surgfit™, a remote monitoring system designed to help hospitals deliver safer and more effective surgical care across the region.
Michael Morgan-Curran, CEO of Asclepius MedTech, said:“We are delighted to have won the Mayor’s big ideas challenge. Its initial funding has allowed us to understand the depth of health inequality across West Yorkshire, and this additional funding will help us develop Surgfit™ to positively contribute to altering this reality.
“Our goals are resolute, to improve surgical outcomes, reduce post-surgical complications and hospital readmissions across West Yorkshire, saving the NHS millions; and to empower all patients, regardless of their background or where they live.”
One third of patients miss vital surgical risk assessments because current hospital tests are often inaccessible for frail or disabled people. In West Yorkshire, patients from minority ethnic groups and the poorest communities are 50% more likely to miss these appointments. Surgfit™ replaces hospital visits with a disposable wearable sensor worn at home for seven days.
The Mayor’s Big Ideas Challenge was launched by West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin in February 2025 to accelerate innovative products, services and technologies that address health inequalities affecting communities across the region.
Tim East, Workstream Lead for Start-Ups at Propel HealthTech Accelerator, replied:“We’re incredibly proud to see Asclepius named as one of the three winners. It’s a fantastic achievement and a testament to the quality of innovations being developed across our programme.”
The award-winning Surgfit™ is the world’s 1st remote patient assessment system for pre- and post-operative surgical assessment. Co-designed with surgeons and anaesthetists as an alternative to traditional in-hospital practice and also suitable for research bodies, pharma life science and surgical companies.
