Medilink North of England member, Nexus – connecting business with world-leading research.

Medilink North of England member, Nexus, a new £40m innovation centre, is at the forefront of the University of Leeds’ commitment to research and innovation. Representing a step change in the way the University works with business, Nexus provides seamless access to world-leading academic research, facilities and equipment.

Nexus’ purpose-built office and lab space will be home to a growing, vibrant and dynamic community of start-ups, SMEs and corporate R&D teams. It will also house the University’s research and innovation service and dedicated relationship managers offering support, advice and expertise to help accelerate growth in technology-led businesses

Led by influential Director Dr Martin Stow, and with a particular focus on medical and healthcare technologies, Nexus will act as a catalyst for further growth within the Leeds City Region.

Martin has over 25 years’ experience working in senior worldwide research and development and leadership roles within the healthcare and life science industries, both in multinational businesses - as Vice President for R&D with Johnson & Johnson - and in start-up organisations. Having brought over 25 new products to market in the Medical Device Diagnostics and Consumer sectors he is well placed to support businesses with ambitions for growth.

Medical and healthcare technologies are a vitally important sector in the Leeds City Region with the area earning recognition as a UK concentration of excellence for research and innovation in medical technologies. With 8.9% of UK medtech patents originating in Leeds and over 250 businesses specialising in medical technologies, Nexus is perfectly located at the heart of an already successful and growing innovation ecosystem.

The Leeds City Region innovation ecosystem is set to be further boosted by Grow MedTech, a £9.5million partnership of universities - led by the University of Leeds - which will be supported by Nexus and expects to bring around 20 potentially life-enhancing devices into everyday use during the next three years.

Building on the research and innovation successes at the University of Leeds and through changing the culture and mindset by which universities work with industry; Nexus will be the driving force in expanding the culture of collaborative research and innovation in Leeds and beyond, making a powerful impact on business, the economy and society.
